Host Everything
Hosting everything is about taking control of your life. Expressing your personality and character. Asking the questions what do I want from this? What would I like to do? What do I want from life? And then actually making it happen.
When I was younger I was too busy trying to “fit in”. In the recent years I have realised a way more sustainable way to live is to just be yourself and where you fit tends to automatically find you. Hosting everything is about just bringing yourself into all situations. Instead of waiting for the answers, trying to answer the questions yourself. Even if they sometimes miss the mark. Instead of waiting for someone else to tell you what to do, getting into the habit of asking yourself within what you want to do and then expressing it.
I have experienced that hosting everything you tend to enjoy the outcome way more than otherwise and believe it or not it also increases your value in your group because suddenly you are the one contributing ideas and setting the direction which is admittedly one of the hardest things to do. So whenever in doubt, just assume you are hosting. Going to a meeting and not sure what the agenda is? Prepare before hand and go with an agenda prepared. A dinner plan is brewing but logistics are still up in the air? Propose a time and place that you think would be a good fit.
What starts to happen is when you start hosting these small things in life, it slowly also prepares you to host the big decisions in life. Where do I want to live? What career do I want? Who do I want to marry? If you dont practice hosting the small decisions you will never have the muscle ready to host the big ones! Just following conventional wisdom is probably the worst thing you can do for yourself.
Also hosting everything does not mean just dominate everyone else. It just means having a plan ready but also being open to a change of plan if something better comes up. This is also in line with what the science of Imrprov tells you. While doing improv you should have strong opinions about the character and the scene you are in. But if your scene partner throws another idea, you quickly “Yes, AND?” to jump on a new reality instead. So always try to define your reality but be receptive to gifts from others. Host everything!
